National Geographic often creates historical and ethnographic maps in addition to its maps showing physical geography. These are great for home schooling or other education uses, as posters, or for those who just enjoy a well-designed map.

Here's a list of Bible History, Ancient Egyptian history, Africa and Middle East related 'maps' from the last 60 years and more of National Geographic. I've been collecting them for over 10 years now.

Bible Lands & History

These maps are useful whether you're reading the Bible or ancient history. Especially helpful are the overlapping names both ancient and modern

Classical Lands

Great for reference while reading historical novels like Colleen McCullough's Rome series. THe 1982 map in particular shows multiple names as empires rose and fell.

  • Exploring Rajasthan in India

Rajasthan is one of the most visited areas of India and it well deserves its reputation. The Golden Triangle circuit tour indcludes Delhi, Agra [Taj Mahal] and jaipur, but that barely touches Rajasthan. You need several weeks to visit Mt. Abu, Jaisalmer, Pushkar, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Ranakpur, and you'll still only have started. These are excerpts from my journal for our 2009 trip to India. We had been to Rajsathan several times before, so for this trip we made a base near Kumbhalgarh Fort - 2 months ago

  • Life's Dominion -

Not light reading or a polemic, but rather a carefully and closely reasoned investigation of how one comes to decisions about matters involving the taking of life, with particular emphasis on doing so under the US Constitution - 3 months ago

  • Eastern Turkey - From Trabzond to Van

Today, a traveler needs a vivid imagination to conjure a vision of the past from the current industrial and grimy port of Trabzon, with its Russian flea markets, dilapitated bridges . But several parks and mosques are worth a visit, especially the Aya Sophia, standing on a bluff overlooking the Black Sea. - 3 months ago
